Poems for Mothers

Meeting with Mother

She was the first one who showed me the moon
And the first snow on spruces,
And the first rain.
I was as little as a shell then.
And the black dress of mother’s rustled like the Black Sea.

Konstanty Ildefons Ga³czyński (1905-1953)

To Mother

I would very much love to bring you a flying carpet,
And a duck that lays pure gold eggs.
To make you live with no troubles – joyful and happy.
But such strange things can be found only in fairy tales.
And that is why, seeing your tired face,
And your hands tired with the looms
With my thoughts I foresee the future and I start to dream,
I will replace you at work, when I grow up.
But today for your care, troubles and your sacrifice,
And for your love so unshaken,
I can only hold you with my arm
And whisper in your ear: Thank you, Mum.

Wanda Grodzieńska (1906-1966)
